Here's where you can and can't use fireworks to ring in the New Year

Fireworks laws have changed over the past couple of years in the state's most populous counties. Here's what you should know.

SEATTLE — The New Year is right around the corner and laws on discharging fireworks have changed over the past couple of years in the state's most populous counties.

Here's what you should know.

King County

Fireworks are banned in unincorporated King County, in all city, county and state parks, and within most city limits except for the following:

  • Auburn, Hunts Point, Pacific: 6 p.m. Dec. 31 – 1 a.m. Jan. 1
  • Normandy Park: 6 p.m. Dec. 31 – 12:30 a.m. Jan. 1
  • Snoqualmie: 10 p.m. Dec. 31 – 12:30 a.m. Jan. 1

Pierce County

This is the first year fireworks in unincorporated areas of the county will only be allowed on July 4 and New Year's Eve. Fireworks can be discharged from 6 p.m. Dec. 31 to 1 a.m. Jan. 1, per state law. The Pierce County Council passed the ordinance last year.

Additionally, some cities have prohibited the discharge of fireworks or have adjusted the times when fireworks can be used.

According to the latest information from the Fire Prevention Bureau, the following cities allow fireworks from 6 p.m. Dec. 31 to 1 a.m. Jan. 1:

  • Bonney Lake
  • Eatonville
  • Carbonado
  • Edgewood
  • Fife
  • Milton
  • Orting
  • Wilkeson

Fireworks are allowed in Buckley from 9 a.m. Dec. 31 to 12:30 a.m. Jan. 1, South Prairie from 12:30 p.m. Dec. 31 to 1 a.m. Jan. 1, and in Lakewood and Roy from 11 p.m. Dec. 31 to 1 a.m. Jan. 1.

Fireworks are banned in all city, county and state parks.

Snohomish County

New Year’s fireworks are not allowed anywhere in unincorporated Snohomish County but are allowed in Darrington, Granite Falls, Monroe, Stanwood and Sultan from 6 p.m. Dec. 31 – 1 a.m. Jan. 1

Fireworks are banned in all city, county and state parks.


Thurston County

New Year's fireworks are banned in unincorporated Thurston County and in most cities.

Fireworks are allowed to be discharged in Yelm, Tenino and Rainier from 6 p.m. Dec. 31 to 1 a.m. Jan. 1.

Fireworks are banned in all city, county and state parks.

Kitsap County

Fireworks are not allowed anywhere in unincorporated Kitsap County, except for July 4, and in all city, county and state parks. Fireworks are allowed in Poulsbo from 6 p.m. Dec. 31 – 1 a.m. Jan. 1.
