Meet the bartender who has been pouring drinks for more than 60 years

Shanty Tavern on Lake City Way is the place to be on Fridays - 5 Star Dive Bar. #k5evening

SEATTLE — It’s probably one of the lasting roadhouses still standing. A small building with a lot of history on Lake City Way that is only open on Fridays. But locals and regular customers don’t mind visiting their favorite spot once a week, because is all about visiting a bar that celebrates people.

“It's only Friday, but there's another welcoming day,” said bartender John Spaccarotelli. “The Shanty Tavern a great place to come too.”

The Shanty Tavern has been around for many decades, entertaining many generations. The attachment that many neighbors have to this small business is easy to understand, but no one is more connected to this place than Spaccarotelli.

The love that Spaccarotelli has for this tavern goes way back. He got the place in 1961 and after six decades the connection never faded. Working as a bartender at his own business is where Spaccarotelli found his true passion, the same passion he has today at 92 years old.

“My family means my customers, their families,” said Spaccarotelli. “I have my home, and I have my Shanty bar.”

“My father, John, owns the place, he doesn't want to give up the business,” said daughter Dayna Spaccarotelli. “Every moment with him is precious.”

Spaccarotelli will greet everyone with a big smile, serve you a drink and right away start a conversation. A welcoming and contagious atmosphere that make this establishment unique in many ways.

“The bar has got lots of character because of the person behind the bar is a character that's unique,” said a Shanty Tavern customer. “The hospitality is genuine.”

The drink menu is simple at the Shanty, no hard liquor for sale. But you're welcome to have beer and wine, and if you need a glass of water, Spaccarotelli says it’s free.

It's more than having a drink or two. It's about having a good time and connecting as human beings.

And if you think this tavern, it's fun at daytime, wait for nighttime, because that's where the party really starts. That's because Spaccarotelli's favorite things in life are people and music.

When the clock hits 9 p.m. at the Shanty Tavern, great live musical performances happen at their stage, entertaining customers until the late-night hours.

“I have sang with the band on occasion,” said Spaccarotelli. “I've even danced for the customer on the floor.”

When it comes to having a good time, Spaccarotelli is always ready to turn on the heat.

If you are looking to have a special night that you will remember and connect with normal people. This old school roadhouse is a must visit.
