Meet Makoa: 9-year-old runs bases at Mariners' opener

A pint-sized pitcher was the first to round the bases at Safeco Field during the Seattle Mariners' 2018 season opener.

9-year-old Makoa loves playing baseball, especially pitching, but his life was put on hold by a lymphoma diagnosis last year. Chemotherapy and a weakened immune system kept Makoa from attending school and playing baseball with his friends.

Now with cancer treatments behind him, Makoa is well enough to get back on the baseball diamond — and show off his speed around the bases. Make-A-Wish of Alaska and Washington teamed up with the Seattle Mariners to get Makoa on the brand new Safeco Field turf for 2018 Opening Night.

The hosts of KING 5's Local Lens sat down with 9-year-old Makoa during his practice for the main event:
