One person shot, killed by Kent police officer during pursuit

One officer was involved in the shooting, according to police.

KENT, Wash. — A Kent police officer fatally shot one of two suspects believed to be connected to a stolen vehicle during a pursuit Tuesday afternoon.

Around 12:20 p.m., Kent officers responded to a report of a suspicious circumstance. Two males, whose ages are not known, left a vehicle in a driveway, stated they were out of gas, and walked to a nearby gas station at 272nd Street and Military Road South.

Officers learned the vehicle left in the 911 caller's driveway was reported stolen. Officers confronted the suspects, one of who began to run.

The suspect was chased by officers on foot into a nearby neighborhood. As they closed in, an officer radioed that the suspect had a knife, according to information from the Kent Police Department.

The suspect continued to run from officers, running behind a home in the 3600 block of South 262nd Street.

Officers caught up to the suspect and a short time later, an officer reported shots were fired. Life-saving efforts were attempted, but the suspect died at the scene.

The other suspect did not flee and was taken into custody without incident and was booked on a previous traffic warrant.

No officers were injured. The officer involved in the shooting will be placed on paid administrative leave.

The Valley Independent Investigation Team was called to do an independent investigation. Port of Seattle detectives will lead the investigation.
