Deadly shooting outside Newcastle Library under investigation

A 26-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

NEWCASTLE, Wash. — The Newcastle Library is closed after a man was found dead near the building early Monday morning.

A 911 call was made at 2:27 a.m. Monday about gunshots being heard in the vicinity of the library on Newcastle Way.

The King County Sheriff's Office and Newcastle police officers responded and found a 26-year-old man who had been shot. He was declared dead at the scene.

A 23-year-old woman was detained at the scene, and King County detectives will continue to investigate.

Hansen Fan, an employee at DIY Tea Lab located across from the library, said it is "pretty surprising to see such a bad incident to happen in such a safe neighborhood like Newcastle."

The shots woke Lily Baun up.

"I think it was about five gun shots that went off," Baun said. "And I heard dogs howling and I thought it might've been someone chasing away coyotes because we've seen them around the area."

Baun learned what actually happened once it was reported in the news.

The King County Sheriff's Office believes the shooting was a domestic violence incident.
