Puget Sound air quality not threatened, despite Canadian wildfires

Puget Sound-area residents have yet to experience any issues related to the wildfires in Canada.

Air quality in the Puget Sound region has yet to be impacted from wildfire smoke drifting down from Canada, and it's possible that may continue, at least in the coming days.

Hazy skies can be seen in portions of Washington and Idaho. Multiple fires are burning near Alberta, where tens of thousands of acres have been destroyed.

KING 5 Meteorologist Rich Marriott says much of the smoke from the wildfires in Canada is expected to stay well east.

That is expected to continue, as winds in Washington became southwesterly later in the weekend and early next week, pushing smoke even farther away.

Additionally, cooler weather with a chance of rain could keep local wildfires at bay, at least for a little while.

Western Washington faces a greater likelihood of significant wildland fire in the coming months. Dry, warm conditions are expected to continue across western Washington, according to the National Climate Prediction Center.
