Theater for everyone! 🎭 Sensory friendly shows! | Local Lens Seattle

Theater should be accessible to all. Performance art and live theater impact us in powerful ways. Sponsored by Premera Blue Cross.

SEATTLE — For those living with sensory processing issues it can be a very different experience- one that’s overwhelming on many levels. That’s why it’s been exciting to see the partnership that The Paramount and Premera Blue Cross have to bring sensory-friendly live performances to Seattle.

The Seattle Theatre Group and Sensory Access create sensory-friendly performances of mainstream musicals. Working with the production team they make subtle or substantial alterations to eliminate or reduce the impact of hindrances such as noise, lighting and jolting onstage surprises.

A crucial component of accommodating those with sensory sensitivities is to provide dedicated sensory areas where people can go to reset during the show.

I got to experience a sensory-friendly performance of Disney’s Aladdin. It was a PACKED house, which was amazing to see. I met families who were so thankful to go to the show and some of the amazing people who make these shows possible. There was even a therapy mini pony 🐴 on site from Little Bit Therapeutic riding school. His name was Pete and he was definitely a crowd favorite.
