SEATTLE — Seahawks’ kicker Jason Myers kicked a game winning field goal as time expired to beat the Washington Commanders 29-26.
“It was exciting, a nail-biter, stressful, all the elements you could want in a game, from the good feelings to the scary feelings to the nervous feelings,” Terry Hollimon said. “But the Seahawks came out victorious, so we’re okay today.”
The win brought the Seahawks’ record to 6-3 on the season. Geno Smith led not one, but two, game-winning drives after the Commanders tied the game late in the fourth quarter.
“The Seahawks proved yesterday that two game-winning drives are better than one,” Hollimon said. “They came through at the end of the game. It looked like Geno Smith finally put things together at the end of the quarter.”
The offense had a season-high 489 yards, with Smith passing for 369 of those. On the final two drives, Smith completed 9 of 11 passes. It was a fight until the very end, and although the defense gave up 26 points, their effort was enough to get the win.
“They were bend don’t break like they’ve always been, and they’ve proven themselves to be good enough to hang on yesterday,” Hollimon said.
Linebacker Boye Mafe has now had seven consecutive games with a sack, setting a franchise record. He also had an important pass bat down on third down to get the defense off the field.
“This guy is turning into one of the stars on this defense,” Hollimon said.
Rookie cornerback Devon Witherspoon also had another great game, recording five tackles and three pass deflections.
“He’s playing like a defensive player of the year,” Hollimon said. “He’s one of the top cornerbacks in the National Football League.”
For his player of the game, though, Hollimon chose kicker Jason Myers. Myers kicked five field goals and two extra points, accounting for more than half of the Seahawks’ points.
“He’s proven to be very crucial for the Seahawks this year and their success,” Hollimon said. “Shout out to Myers. He’s been doing good.”
The Seahawks go on the road this week to take on the Rams in Los Angeles. Though the Rams always play the Seahawks tough, Hollimon expects a win.
“We’re good. We’re 6-3. Hopefully we’ll be 7-3,” Hollimon said.
