Pierce County moves forward with resort plan at Chambers Creek Regional Park

The Pierce County Council voted to move forward with a high-end resort plan for Chambers Creek Regional Park that would include a hotel, restaurants, and residential space.

The Pierce County Council voted in favor of the further development of Chambers Bay Resort in Pierce County. There are plans to expand the renowned golf course and park that brought the U.S. Open to the South Sound with a hotel, a Tom Douglass restaurant and more.

But not everyone is happy about the decision.

"This is just an easy way for the council to get private interest money to build with little risk to you as a council but it's a big risk to the community and the public that you were elected to serve," said Troy Jella.

County council voted 6-1 in favor of a 100-year lease agreement with Chambers Bay Resort, LLC allowing the construction of a hotel and resort on a portion of Chambers Creek. When construction is completed, there are members of the public who are concerned about access.

"They're taking public land for two story town homes and a high end resort with killer views, that few members of the public can really use," said one member of the public Tuesday night.

There were some in support of the plan.

"The approval of Chambers Bay Resort development without delay will benefit the community of local carpenters and their families," said a member of a local carpenters union.

Pierce County Council members went through more than one dozen amendments to the original plan.
