14-year-old boy dies after Lake Washington swimming accident

A teenage boy pulled from Lake Washington on Memorial Day died at the hospital on Tuesday.

A teenage boy died Tuesday after being pulled from Lake Washington on Monday afternoon.

The 14-year-old boy had been swimming off Seattle's Magnuson Park on Memorial Day when he submerged around 2:20 p.m. Witnesses said he was brought up to a floating dock, where an off-duty Seattle firefighter, nurse and doctor performed CPR for several minutes before the boy was brought to shore.

The fire department and a police boat arrived on scene, and the teen was taken to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition.

Seattle Fire Captain Shata Stephenson said it's unclear what led up to the boy's emergency.

The Northshore School District has identified the boy as 14-year-old Ryan Payne, an 8th grade student at Kenmore Middle School.

Principal Bryan Stutz shared, "Ryan’s impact continues to be felt deep and wide throughout our District. He brought an exuberant presence that seemed to attract friends new and old."

Magnuson Beach is currently closed to swimmers due to E. coli detected in the water. Signs are posted warning people and pets to stay out of the water, but the park remains open.
