Snohomish County neighbors remain vigilant during rampant security camera thefts

Two neighborhoods in Snohomish County report a rise in security cameras thefts. A couple of the neighbors have caught the suspect on camera.

In Snohomish County, there are several reports of stolen security cameras.

A K Okuboyejo said his Arlo Pro security camera was stolen outside his Lynnwood home just before 4 a.m. June 29.

"All the footage is stored to the cloud, so even though he got the physical camera I have the complete footage of him stealing the whole camera," said Okuboyejo.

The video shows a man walking onto the property, then walking away. Minutes later, the man returns with a broom, and after a few hard hits, the security camera comes falling down. The man takes off running.

"When you see that sinister activity happening around your house, it is a bit unsettling," said Okuboyejo.

Through a community Facebook group, Okuboyejo was able to connect with other neighbors who said the same thing happened to them. He says in each case an Arlo Pro camera was taken.

"As of now I have counted four different houses that were victims," he said.

About 20 miles away, near Everett, another neighborhood experienced at least three security camera thefts around June 30 and July 1, according to Gina Giefer.

One of Giefer's neighbors captured surveillance video of a theft in progress.

"Previous camera owners weren't able to get such a good picture. It was either he had his hat down or his face was covered," said Giefer as she displayed the clear image. She turned it into flyers that have been passed around the neighborhood.

Giefer said she's been warning her neighbors "to bring awareness that, one, this is happening. And two, if you know who the guy is, report him."

"There seems to be a secondary market for this stuff, and you could just be a victim like the rest of us," warns Okuboyejo, who adds that people need to be vigilant.

Shari Ireton, a spokesperson with the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office says an investigation is underway. It is still not known if all of the cases are connected.
