Community members attend funeral for pregnant woman killed in Belltown shooting

Eina Kwon, 34, and Sung Kwon were shot at random while waiting at a traffic light in their car, just blocks from their restaurant.

SEATTLE — The family of Eina Kwon, the pregnant woman shot and killed in Seattle's Belltown neighborhood on June 13, invited the public to her funeral on Friday, June 23.

Kwon's funeral service was held at 2 p.m. at Acacia Memorial Park & Funeral Home.

When something so senseless happens. “It sucks the oxygen from my lungs, it’s so sad,” said Maurine Kochanek, who visited the Eina Kwon’s Memorial. It can be hard to find the words, and many didn’t have them. “I’ve been praying for her as I walk back and forth."

From the memorial in Belltown to the Acacia Memorial Park and Funeral Home in Lake Forest Park.

“We’ve been honored to walk with the Kwon family through the death of their wife and mother,” said Vince Larkin who is the Director of the Acacia Memorial Park and Funeral Home.

Sometimes, it’s the act of showing up that matters most. That’s what the community did.

“Every death impacts some part of our community, some deaths reverberate well beyond those that loved and knew the person,” said Larkin.

Eina Kwon and her baby were shot and killed in a seemingly random shooting. More than one week later, people packed her funeral including Seattle Police Chief Adrian Diaz and Mayor Bruce Harrell.

"We are all victims, the Seattle community are the victims, it should stop," said Elliott Kim who went to the funeral.

Eliot Kim said he represents the Korean Community, one that is mourning the death of Eina and her baby Evelyn, "It is very sad, it is very sorrowful, tearful."

Meanwhile, a memorial continues to grow outside Aburiya Bento House, the restaurant she owned with her husband, Sung Kwon. On Thursday, people Kwon never met mourned her death.

"I stood here and cried for, like, ten minutes," Belltown resident Cynthia Askew said.

"I am emotional. How can you not be? You look at the family, their hopes and dreams are gone like that," she added.

Eina Kwon, 34, and Sung Kwon were shot at random while waiting at a traffic light in their car, just blocks from their restaurant. Surveillance video shows the suspected shooter, Cordell Maurice Goosby, running up to their car and firing multiple rounds into the driver's side window. Goosby then ran, before being arrested.

Goosby, 30, was charged June 16 with first-degree murder and first-degree attempted murder. Additional charges may be added, according to the King County Prosecutor's Office.

Eina Kwon was 32 weeks pregnant at the time of the shooting.

Eina and Sung Kwon were taken to Harborview Medical Center. Eina was rushed into surgery and her baby was emergently delivered. Both Eina and her baby girl died. Sung, who was shot multiple times in his left arm, survived.

The gun Goosby allegedly used was stolen during a burglary.

Goosby didn't have a local criminal history. However, he is wanted out of Indiana for a 2020 domestic battery case and has felony convictions from Illinois for possession of controlled substances and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon/vehicle.
