Piles of heavy snow cause damage across south Puget Sound

Heavy, rain-soaked snow weighted down structures and caused several to collapse this week around the south end of Puget Sound.

OLYMPIA, Wash. — Add water to more than a foot of snow, and you’re going to get problems.

“It was commotion last night, utter commotion,” said Steven Hooper whose car was crushed by a carport at his Lacey apartment complex.

As the metal roof began to buckle around six Monday night, Hooper and his neighbors ran to try and pull their cars out from under.

He didn’t make it and watched the carport collapse.

“It was like they demolished the Kingdome,” said Hooper.

At about the same time in Olympia, two sections of a roof collapsed on boats docked at West Bay Marina.

Three boats sank, several others were damaged.

Earlier Monday, Tina Harris and others who live or work at the marina tried shoveling snow off the roofs in anticipation of collapses.

It didn’t work.

Harris said she felt lucky her boat only suffered minor damage.

“I’m sad and emotional about the people who lost their boats,” said Harris.
