Seattle Humane CEO says donations not on pace with rise in operating costs

Recently, the community stepped up to restock Seattle Humane's Pet Food Bank.

BELLEVUE, Wash. — Seattle Humane recently posted online that their Pet Food Bank desperately needed food and donations.

The community went over and above the call to action. Truckloads of food showed up to fill up a space that helps the community every week.

"We're an organization that is donor-funded, 83% of all of our operating budget comes from the generous community in which we live," said Seattle Humane's Interim CEO, Jessie Swisher-Spiers.

Swisher-Spiers entered the interim CEO role in early March. She is calling on the community again for help.

"Our greatest need right now is for folks to donate and continue to give," Swisher-Spiers said.

Swisher-Spiers said that donations haven't kept up with the rising cost of doing business. She believes the reason is due to inflation. Seattle Humane recently had to let go of 15% of their workforce.

"We've had to make some very difficult decisions about remaining committed to our mission and serving as many pets as possible," Swisher-Spiers said.

Another way to give back is with time. People can volunteer at the pet food bank or the shelter to help with animals.

"We literally cannot do what we do without our 1,200-person strong volunteer base," Swisher-Spiers said.

The average cost of every animal they care for before being adopted is around $525.

"That cost of care is really important. That is the baseline that we're working to every day. And that's what we were looking to our community to help us continue to do," Swisher-Spiers said.

If you can adopt, Seattle Humane would love to help. They have many pets ready to go to their forever homes.
