Coast Guard suspends search for missing kayaker near Edmonds

The man set out Sunday morning on a kayak and hasn't been seen since.

EDMONDS, Wash. — The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended a search for a kayaker who went missing near Edmonds on Sunday.

The man, who is in his 50s, reportedly left to kayak late morning.

Altogether, crews searched for over 20 hours and covered 97 square miles of water in their search.

Rescue crews searched waters southwest of Edmonds using a response boat, cutter and helicopter.

After the Air Station Port Angeles crew reached its time limits, an aircrew from Astoria, Oregon responded, according to the Coast Guard. Crews on an 87-foot patrol boat searched for the man.

Although weather conditions were dry Sunday, temperatures were chilly, reaching 49 degrees at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, according to the National Weather Service. Overnight lows reached 33 degrees, which was the coldest overnight temperature so far this month.

Cold water temperatures can be dangerous for even the best swimmers as they can cause cold water shock, which causes dramatic changes in breathing, heart rate and blood pressure, according to the National Weather Service. If someone begins gasping, it can create a higher drowning risk.

Body heat can be lost four times faster in cold water than cold air, the weather service said.

Wearing a life jacket significantly increases chances for survival when cold water shock takes effect.
