Another Olympia bus driver resigns after 2nd child left on bus

A second Olympia bus driver has resigned after another incident of a child being left alone on a school bus.

Another Olympia school bus driver has resigned for leaving a student unattended on a school bus.

The first incident happened earlier this fall. In November, a driver resigned after failing to check for students after parking a bus for the night. As a result, a pre-schooler was unattended on his school bus for more than an hour.

Then on December 18, a 6-year-old student in first grade was left alone for about a minute-and-a-half, according to the Olympia School District.

Now that bus driver has also resigned for violating district policy.

The driver originally said she found the student while doing the required walk-through inspection. Surveillance video on the bus showed the driver getting off the bus without checking for passengers or belongings left behind.

Following the November incident, the district retrained all drivers and mechanics on the policy requiring walk-throughs.

The district also began installing alarms requiring drivers to push a button in the back of the bus before opening the front door. According to the district, 18 of the 84 busses in the fleet have had the alarms installed.

A spokesperson said all of the buses should be outfitted by the end of the school year.
