KING 5's Michelle Li is preparing to welcome a baby boy! To celebrate, she's hosting a diaper drive with local nonprofit WestSide Baby.

Michelle will be taking donations at the University Village QFC store (2746 NE 45th St, Seattle) on Thursday, October 4, from 3 to 6 p.m.

Can't make it? No problem. You can also give a gift online.

WestSide Baby's biggest need is diapers sizes 4, 5 and 6.

Newborns can use up to 12 diapers a day, at the cost of up to $100 per month.

If we were to help every child of diaper-wearing age in King County, living below the federal poverty line, we would need 22 million diapers a year. 23 percent of King County families say they struggle to afford diapers. In South King County, that jumps up to 36 percent.

In Washington state, diapers are a taxable item unlike other necessities such as food or medical supplies. Food stamps cannot be used to purchase diapers. It often forces parents to pick between buying diapers and paying bills.

WestSide Baby has offices in South Lake Union and White Center. The organization provides essential items including diapers to families across Western King County.
