VANCOUVER, Wash. — A man was shot and killed with a bow and arrow near Vancouver Tuesday morning, according to a news release from the Clark County Sheriff's Office. The incident apparently happened during a fight between two people who knew each other, the sheriff's office said, and the suspect was arrested a short time later.
Clark County Medical Examiner's identified the man killed as 42-year-old David Joseph Collins Sr. on Friday.
The suspect called 911 at about 6:45 a.m. and reported that he had shot a man with a bow and arrow during a fight on Northeast Petticoat Lane. The street is immediately north of State Route 500 in the Minnehaha neighborhood, just north of the Vancouver city limits.
Deputies arrived and found a deceased man with an arrow in his chest in the driveway of a house. A witness told police they had seen two men fighting in front of the house just after 6 a.m., and one of them had walked away with the other following in a vehicle. The sheriff's office said the two men apparently later returned and continued the fight, resulting in the shooting.
Natallya Escareno, a neighbor who spoke to KGW Tuesday afternoon, said she was woken up by her dogs barking when police knocked at her door.
"I look out and I see a body with an arrow sticking out in front of my house, so I was very confused at this point," she said. "I went out and asked, the cops were questioning me. I never thought that this would happen in my neighborhood."
The suspect, Richard Vanderhoek, gave the victim's first name to the sheriff's office and referred to him as an acquaintance. Vanderhoek was taken to a hospital for minor injuries, then arrested and charged with second-degree murder. The sheriff's office said the case is still active and pending further investigation.
