Chef of Matia Kitchen in Orcas Island nominated for James Beard Award

SEATTLE — Matia Kitchen from western Washington's Orcas Island has earned a 2024 James Beard Award nomination.

Matia Kitchen was founded by Avery Adams and Drew Downing in 2016 with a mission to bring more than just sustainability to the industry.

Matia's Executive Chef Adams has been nominated for the Best Chef in the Northwest and Pacific region award. Matia is known for its experimental sustainable rotating menu.

Matia is located at 382 Prune Alley in Eastsound and is open for dinner from 5 - 9 p.m. Thursday through Sunday.

The James Beard Awards, which were first awarded in 1991, recognize achievement in culinary arts, as well as a commitment to equity, community and sustainability. They are among the most prestigious honors in the restaurant industry.

The 2024 winners will be announced during an awards ceremony in Chicago on June 10.

Matia is one of several other Washington state restaurants and chefs who were named finalists for a James Beard Award this year. Other finalists include the following:

Outstanding Restaurateur: Quynh-Vy and Yenvy Pham, Phở Bắc Súp Shop, Phởcific Standard Time, and The Boat in Seattle.

Emerging Chef: Janet Becerra of Pancita in Seattle

Best New Restaurant: Bar Bacetto in Waitsburg

Best Chef in the Northwest and Pacific region:

  • Melissa Miranda, Musang in Seattle
