Vancouver Island is the setting for a horrifying crime onscreen and in real life

Seattle's Lily Gladstone stars in the Hulu limited series "Under the Bridge." #k5evening

SEATTLE — One of the stars of the new Hulu true crime series "Under the Bridge" is Oscar-nominated actor Lily Gladstone, who just happens to be a graduate of Mountlake Terrace High.

The other is Golden Globe nominee Riley Keough, who just happens to be the granddaughter of Elvis Presley. You may have seen her on I-5.

"I'm not from (Seattle) but I just drove through," Keough said.

Gladstone and Keough have had quite a year. Gladstone became the first indigenous woman to win a Golden Globe for her performance in "Killers of the Flower Moon." Keough's starring role in "Daisy Jones and the Six" scored nominations for Emmy, MTV and Golden Globe awards.

So, how do they carry themselves at awards shows knowing the whole world is watching and waiting for their reactions?

"I kind of hang on, I anticipate who do I get to be excited for?" said Gladstone. "And then when it's you, you're like, oh, okay, I'm gonna be excited for me."

Keough laughed, "My experience was, 'please God not me, not me, not me!'"

The two have wanted to work together for a while now. Both were drawn to this story of a shocking Vancouver Island crime committed by middle schoolers. The series explores bullying, racism and a generation in search of a moral center.

"Being in Seattle, being so close to Vancouver, this story rocked all of Canada," Gladstone said. "And I feel like we caught a little bit of that. They're not stories. This is reality. We still are experiencing teens doing these horrible things to each other."

Keough added, "I thought it was a really interesting opportunity to explore these themes in a way that I hadn't seen before."

Though the material is dark, "Under the Bridge" gave Keough and Gladstone a chance to build a friendship.

"I like your hair," Gladstone said when we challenged the women in a lighter moment to pay each other a small compliment.

"Oh thank you," Keough replied, "I like your sparkly toenail polish."

Gladstone added, "I like the brain that's underneath that hair, too."

Two good friends with a story to tell. And they hope it's one you'll want to hear.

"Under the Bridge" is now streaming on Hulu.
