Seattle stylist teaches men how to maximize thrift shopping

Whitney Hahn's 'City Thrifting with a Personal Stylist' experience is available via Airbnb

SEATTLE — A Seattle personal stylist is combining her professional eye with her love for thrifting in an Airbnb experience.

"I think people know they can get really good, quality items at thrift stores,” said Whitney Hahn, owner of Style Skimm. “A lot of people just don't know where or how to start."

Hahn’s “Thrift Tour” experience costs $69 a person and offers clients a whirlwind two-hour thrifting education. She accompanies them to different resale stores and teaches them how to put together stylish outfits on a budget.

"My go-to places are Goodwill, for sure,” she said. “Crossroads Trading Co. is another excellent place.”

The tour includes tricks and strategies for maximizing the thrifting experience – and she provides snacks and water.

Hahn specializes in menswear and encourages clients to break out of their comfort zones by trying new colors and patterns.

Incorporating inexpensive accessories – like scarves – also helps create complete looks.

"They're kind of like pocket squares, you can use them to dress stuff up,” she said.

Client Buddy Buterbaugh usually spends $200-$300 when he shops retail. With Hahn’s help, he bought three complete outfits and a t-shirt from Seattle Goodwill on Capitol Hill for $105.

"I'm as cheap as the next guy - if I can find that little treasure you don't have to pay retail for, I'm a pretty happy camper,” he said. "You need the outside perspective of someone who knows what's going to look better on you than what you would do yourself."

But no matter how great the discount, Hahn advises her clients to show restraint when shopping second-hand.

"My rule is, if it's not a ‘hell yeah,’ then pass,” she said.
