Evening Raves: ‘A Gentleman in Moscow,’ a fish doorbell and ‘3 body problem’

Evening hosts rave about their weekly obsessions including new TV shows and virtually helping wildlife. #k5evening

SEATTLE —

I'm going to kick things off with a rave for a series I’ve only seen one episode of – and I already know what’s going to happen.

The series is “A Gentleman in Moscow.” It’s on Showtime and Paramount+ and stars Ewan McGregor as Count Alexander Rostov who survives the Russian Revolution only to be told he must spend the rest of his life in a luxury hotel.

The reason I know what’s going to happen next is that I read the book a couple of years ago. 1.5 million copies were sold.

The other day Anne Erickson, one of the producers on our show, suggested that I check out a website called The Fish Doorbell.

It’s a website from the Netherlands where you can help the fish migrate upstream. The town’s lock is closed in the springtime so they need to wait until there are a few fish waiting and then you can open the door. There’s a camera where you can see when a fish shows up and if you see it, you hit the doorbell so the fish can continue their upward spawn.

My rave is for a new Netflix show, but not because it’s entertaining…though it is. Because it’s educational.

"3 Body Problem" begins with the troubling death of more than two dozen world-renowned scientists. It’s a smart and sometimes funny sci-fi mystery that is also rooted in facts.

From the cultural revolution in China to the study of physics – specifically quantum entanglement – there’s a lot to absorb. My husband works in science, and we had a very cool discussion after one episode. I’ve found myself googling and deep diving after others.

So, if you’re looking for something that’ll make you think, “3 Body Problem” on Netflix might be your series.
