Catamarans, paddleboard yoga, and spas: Aulani has activities for all

Go Type-A on vacay at this Hawaiian resort. Sponsored by Aulani, a Disney Resort and Spa

KAPOLEI, Hawaii — Most of us go on vacation to relax. But, there is plenty to do at Aulani, a Disney Resort and Spa, for folks who are Type-A while on vacay.

Like a catamaran ride that takes off right from the beach and heads out into open water.

When the conch shell blows -- it means the Nakoa Aulani canoe is getting underway.  And there is not a better way to enjoy the turquoise waters of Oahu than to skim across them in a traditional Hawaiian outrigger.

Pools are plentiful, from kiddie pools to pools and spas for 18 and over, for a break from said kiddies Don't miss the palm-framed sunset view from the adults-only infinity-edge spa.

There are even a couple of water-slides that turn grownups into kids. Plus, a lazy river winds through the entire resort; every time Evening’s Saint Bryan went missing, we knew we could find him floating on a double tube through the Waikolohe Valley.

Beginners to snorkeling will want to explore the salt-water pool on resort grounds. It’s filled with hundreds of fish from blue butterfly fish to yellow tangs. Spend some time here and you’ll see why it’s called Rainbow Reef. New this year, guests can try scuba diving in this controlled environment.

Early morning workout sessions are some of the most popular resort offerings at Aulani. Saint hit the beach at 7 am for a workout with Shinobu Tyge, a former bodybuilder who has so much sunny energy, she can replace your cup of morning coffee.

Saint:  "You know some people when they're on vacation they don't want to do anything at all. They just want to eat.”

Shinobu: “I know, that's why we have this! We’re going to be using all these weights, we’ll do beach boot camp and yoga burn, also you're going to touch the water!”

Beach Boot Camp is complimentary for all guests. Aulani also offers complimentary stretching and Tai Chi, along with classes like Ocean Yoga (that’s where you ‘touch the water’ from a paddle board in the bay) for a fee.

Shinobu guided Saint, who does zero yoga, out into the bay on his board.

"Close your eyes, feel the waves, feel the breeze, let everything go,” she urged as she led him through elementary yoga flow balanced atop a paddleboard.

Out on the calm, warm water with the palm trees swaying in the breeze, it suddenly became clear: the activities at Aulani Resort and Spa are just as relaxing as doing absolutely nothing. And slightly more virtuous.
