A one-of-a-kind exploration of Japan’s automotive heritage

"Shinka," the brand-new exhibit that celebrates Japanese cars. #k5evening

TACOMA, Wash. — This immersive exhibit, located on the main floor of the LeMay - America’s Car Museum in Tacoma, WA, opened on March 16. With 46 cars in total, you are guaranteed to see everything related to Japanese vehicles, like the iconic Toyota 2000 GTI from the '60s, and the Fast and Furious-style of cars from the '90s.

The exhibit features everything from classic models that laid the foundation of the Japanese automotive identity to legends of the ’90s and their modern-day successors.

“It is our largest, most immersive exhibit to date,” said Jake Welk, marketing manager for LeMay America’s Car Museum. “Everything that Japanese automotive manufacturers have accomplished.”

The exhibit's name is "Shinka," which means "evolution" or "progress." It reflects on what Japanese vehicles have done to change the course of history for the automotive industry.

During a year-long display, guests will have the opportunity to witness distinct engineering up close. Cars will be rotated into the exhibit throughout the year.

“We felt like this was an opportunity to really showcase something iconic,” said Welk. “We played on the immersion factor in a way that we never have.”

But it is more than just cars; it is an escape to Japanese culture, telling a story.

“We really wanted people to come in and leave feeling that 'Shinka' was an experience rather than just an exhibit of cars,” Welk said.

The museum is open Thursday – Monday | 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., and it's closed Tuesday & Wednesday to the public.
