BELLEVUE, Wash. - The lifeguards are on duty, the sun is out, and the water looks inviting, but the beach at Bellevue's Meydenbauer Beach Park is vacant.

The beach was closed Monday while workers in boats apply a herbicide to attack the bay's growing problem -milfoil.

Bellevue city representatives say the milfoil problem keeps getting worse and has to be removed before it spreads or causes serious environmental damage.

State agencies say the herbicide, Diquat, is safe for this project, but the city decided to close its nearby swimming beaches to protect the public.

The 24-hour closure will keep people out the Meydenbauer Beach waters until Tuesday.

Workers will close the swimming beach at Newcastle Park Tuesdaytreatment.

Bellevue Parks officials want to make sure everyone knows that even though the water is off limits, the park areas and playgrounds are safe and open.
