How a local program is teaching kids the basics about money

Kitsap Credit Union provides free financial literacy courses for students to learn more about money, including budgeting and taxes. Sponsored by Kitsap Credit Union.

SEATTLE — When it comes to money, education is key to success. Learning the fundamentals about finances at a young age can help people make smarter financial decisions throughout life.

“Money is in everything,” said David Inglish, outreach coordinator for Kitsap Credit Union. “We have it coming and going in our lives in many different ways. When somebody is able to make sound financial decisions, if they have that financial education in place, they can set themselves up for their whole lives.”

Having knowledge of key financial concepts, like managing daily expenses and a long-term budget, can help you avoid costly debt, a lack of emergency funds and becoming the victim of scams.

Kitsap Credit Union understands the importance of education, and its KCUCares Foundation helps kids learn about money. The team provides financial wellness programs to 21 high schools across four counties locally.

“We found that one of the best ways to engage with students is to meet them where they’re at, and that’s in schools,” Inglish said. “We have teachers that have been amazing partners in bringing this education into their classrooms.”

The curriculum is designed to be relatable to scenarios students are seeing in their lives in an approachable way. The modules on a variety of topics, like budgeting basics and paycheck taxes, are 30 minutes each, and they can be completed entirely online.

“I try to emphasize there’s no stupid questions around money,” Inglish said. “The more questions you ask, the better off you’re going to be around money.”

Debt is one topic students are particularly interested in now. Inglish says students want to understand it more and get the tools needed to avoid it. The curriculum inspires many kids to have important conversations at home about the topic.

The courses are free on the Kitsap Credit Union website, and KCU is always looking for additional partnerships.

“We would love to partner with as many schools in our area as possible,” Inglish said.
