SEATTLE — The ingredients of this recipe can be found at Salvation Army food banks.

  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced

  • 2 tsp Cumin
  • 2 tsp paprika

The Salvation Army helps people throughout the holiday season and beyond. This includes providing food at its Client Choice Food Banks. Clients go and shop like anyone would at a grocery store, as opposed to being handed a bag of food.

“I love this model because it really allows our clients to feel independent and shop with dignity,” said chef Emme Collins, former executive chef for Seattle Public Schools and past Chopped champion.

Chef Emme recommends shopping in bulk, cooking big batches of meals, like stews and chili, and freezing the extra to save money and time. She demonstrates how you can make a nutritious one-pot chili with ingredients that are available in most food banks and are affordable at the grocery store.

Salvation Army Food Banks provided 344,203 bags of groceries in the past year. The food banks are an entry point to meet a family’s most basic needs, which often opens a door to help address other ways the organization can assist.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re extremely in need of food or just trying to supplement what you already got at home,” chef Emme said. “Come to the food bank. It’s free. Everyone is welcome no matter their income or background.”
