LAS VEGAS — On the bright side, Chris Pratt made an exit joke worthy of dropping the mic following the showcase for his upcoming sci-fi movie Passengers at CinemaCon.
It was just unfortunate that the falling mic landed with a thud on his co-star Jennifer Lawrence.
"Ow! You dropped it on my foot," Lawrence exclaimed as Pratt recoiled in horror.
"That was the anti-Kanye," Pratt declared. "I dropped the mic on your foot."
The minor toe injury aside, Pratt and Lawrence showed tremendous chemistry Tuesday night at the annual convention of theater owners, sharing the stage with Tom Rothman, chairman of Sony Picture Entertainment's Motion Pictures Group.
Riveting first footage from the film directed by Morten Tyldum (in theaters Dec. 21) featured Pratt and Lawrence as passengers in a spacecraft traveling to a distant colonized planet, but awakened decades early because of a malfunction in the ship's sleep chambers.
The clip was one of the highlights at Sony's CinemaCon presentation. Pratt predicted success to theater owners: "Whomever you call to order popcorn and soda, double up the order right around Christmas. Because you’re going to sell a lot of it then."
Kaboom.
Other Sony highlights Tuesday night:
New Ang Lee: Rothman showed first footage of director Ang Lee's long-awaited Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk (in theaters Nov. 11). The drama, featuring an infantryman recalling a pivotal Iraqi battle, stars Kristen Stewart, Vin Diesel, Steve Martin and newcomer Joe Alwyn as the title character.
The battle and homecoming scenes met with a powerful response, proving its suitability for the awards-friendly November release slot.
"There are many filmmakers," said Rothman. "But only one Ang Lee."
'Ghostbusters' arrive: Director Paul Feig brought all four Ghostbusters to the CinemaCon stage — Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. The group showed more footage from the all-female reboot (out July 15), which even featured one of the original 1984 actors in a cameo.
McCarthy credited her love of the classic for her decision to come on board for the new version.
"The original loomed really large for me," said McCarthy. "I loved (the characters), I love the underdog stories. I love unlikely heroes."
Two for 'Magnificent Seven': Pratt joined director Antoine Fuqua back onstage to show clips of The Magnificent Seven. The gritty remake of the classic 1960 Western features Denzel Washington as the black-hatted leader of seven unlikely heroes, including Pratt's character, Josh Farraday, protecting a small town.
Pratt seemed to grow impatient with stilted questions and gave a passionate appeal for the contemporary-feeling Western, which opens Sept. 23.
"We worked our butts off on this movie," said Pratt. "I promise you, this is breathing air into this genre."
