Mariners players share love of baseball with Challengers little league

SEATTLE — On Saturday, several members of the Seattle Mariners played a unique double-header.

Before they took on the Minnesota Twins at T-Mobile Park, several players joined members of Challenger Little League at Garfield Park.

With them was team broadcaster Dave Sims.

“Now it’s time for the two words that start every major league and little league game across the country: play ball!” Sims said.

Challenger is a league for kids with special needs. Everyone got a chance at-bat and to run the bases. The event was part of MLB’s Play Ball initiative, which encourages young people to participate in baseball and softball.

Julie Schoenstadt came with her daughter Ashley. Julie reflected on how nice it was for her daughter to be in the spotlight, after attending so many games in the stands.

“It’s neat for her to have her moment too – because so many times it’s about the other kids,” Schoenstadt said. “It’s her opportunity. All about her.”

For Sims, it’s proof the game of baseball is for everyone.

“Absolutely,” he said. “The ultimate parent-hand-down-to-a-child sport. Everybody can play – and certainly we’re proving that here.”

Mariners rookie pitcher Brandon Brennan assisted players in the outfield – making conversation and signing autographs.

“It’s awesome to be out here with these kids enjoying a game we all love,” he said. “I’m definitely enjoying myself.”

It was also about sharing the game.

“It’s a sport I get to play for my job, but at the same time it’s the same as right here, bunch of kids playing,” he said.
