Lynnwood clinic makes Christmas happen for family in need

The staff at Kaiser Permanente's Lynnwood Clinic stepped up in a huge way to help a family in need this season.

When they were handed a Christmas wishlist full of necessary items for a family of four, plus one on the way, the staff at Kaiser Permanente's Lynnwood Clinic stepped up in a huge way.

"We've come together as a clinic and adopted a family and purchased a lot of gifts for them that a lot of us wouldn't think of as gifts but as necessities," said Katie Johnson, a nurse at the clinic.

Every year, the staff at the clinic contact the Edmonds School District to find a family in need so they can buy Christmas presents.

This year, when the family sent in their wishlist, the hearts of the staff broke.

"They wanted a job, they asked for an Orca card, and then a car and I was thinking these are all things you need to succeed and all of us were really touched," said Johnson.

The family, who the district wants to keep anonymous, is comprised of a pregnant mother, father, a 10-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl. They are new to the country and do not speak English.

All 69 employees at the clinic pitched in, getting baby clothes, boots, lotions, a laptop, an iPad, and other things on the list. About 50 presents are under the tree inside the staff lounge.

A car was even tracked down and the mechanic who had it on his lot put down $400 towards its purchase and gave it a free oil change.

"There's so much need out there and we were able to provide it. It didn't take a lot from anybody, we all just chipped in," said Arlene Engelbright, the clinical operations manager.

Engelbright says they'll deliver the car and gifts to the family next week.
