Veterans Day events and celebrations in western Washington

Cities across western Washington will mark Veterans Day on Nov. 11 with ceremonies, parades and festivities.

SEATTLE — On Nov. 11, western Washington will honor all those who have served in the military, marking Veterans Day with ceremonies and celebrations. 

Here is a round-up of events happening across the region.

Auburn

The 58th annual parade will take place Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. on Main Street. The parade typically includes 200 units and nearly 6,000 participants, including marching bands and military vehicles.

The city is also hosting a community breakfast with the American Legion Auburn Post #78 at the Auburn Senior Activity Center from 7-9 a.m. It costs $10.

A remembrance ceremony will take place at Veterans Memorial Park from 9:45-10:15 a.m. It includes wreath placement, rifle salute, prayers and taps.

At least 25 marching bands will compete at Auburn Memorial Stadium from 1-10 p.m. as part of a Veterans Day competition.

Chehalis

Events on Nov. 11 include a 5K run, lunch and program at the Veterans Memorial Museum. Proceeds from the run, which begins at 9 a.m., benefit Veterans Journey Forward. The lunch, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., is free for veterans and their families. The 2 p.m. program includes speaker Tabitha Hopp, a U.S. Army veteran CW3.

Gig Harbor

Gig Harbor is hosting is sixth annual Veterans Day celebration Nov. 11 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Gig Harbor Antique Aero Museum. Events include a flag ceremony, speakers and lunch, which is free for veterans and $15 for others. RSVP online.

Jefferson County

Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command Northwest will hold a Veterans Day ceremony to honor Marvin G. Shields, who is the only Navy Seabee to receive the Medal of Honor. The ceremony will take place Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. at 137 Gardiner Cemetery Road in Gardiner.

Joint Base Lewis-McChord

JBLM will hold its second annual Wear Blue Veterans Day Run with distances of 11 miles, 11K, 5K and 1.1K. Events begin at 10:45 a.m. and include family activities. Event registration has closed, but you can still come support.

Lacey

Veterans Victory on the Court: A Pickleball Tribute will take place Nov. 11 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the pickleball courts at 23 Kitchens.

Mill Creek

Mill Cree will hold a Veterans Day commemorative ceremony and parade Nov. 11. The ceremony takes place at 9 a.m. at Library Park, and the parade takes place on Main Street in the town center at 11 a.m.

Olympia

The Capitol Rotunda will hold a ceremony Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. honoring veterans and their sacrifice. The American Legion Band will provide live music.

Puyallup

A Veterans Day celebration and concert will feature the South Sound Symphonic Band performing at the pavilion in Pioneer Park. The event takes place Nov. 12 at 2 p.m.

Renton

Vet Corps – North Seattle is holding a Veterans Day foraging hike where people can hunt for mushrooms with “experienced mycophiles.” The hike begins Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. at Harvey Manning Trail. Coffee and doughnuts are also part of the event.

Seattle

The Ballard Eagleson VFW Post 3063 at 2812 NW Market St., will hold an open house Nov. 11 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Connect with other veterans and help dedicate the group’s new flagpole.

Snoqualmie

American Legion Post 79 will hold a flag ceremony at Snoqualmie Casino on Nov. 11 at 10 a.m. There will also be an all-day complimentary buffet for veterans.

Yelm

The city is hosting a Nov. 11 celebration at Yelm City Park from noon to 4 p.m. with food drinks and live music. A spaghetti feed will be held at Quarter Mile Bar and Grill from 6-9 p.m. Proceeds benefit local veteran posts.

Washelli Veterans Memorial Ceremony Event

Community members expressed their gratitude in an annual service at Washelli Veterans Memorial Cemetery Friday. Attendees heard remarks from Chief Warrant Officer 3 Antonio Davila, who shared his gratitude for support in Western Washington.

"The appreciation I have is for everyone else allowing me to serve," Chief Davila said. It's definitely overwhelming, to see this kind of turnout."

Scouting troops placed flags throughout the Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Among them was Alexander Bertelsen, who says his father served as a Green Beret and he was glad to see so many people showing up to honor veterans.

"It warms my heart," Bertelsen said. "I've always looked up to my father as an incredible person and he's inspired me to continue and strive to do good things."
