West Seattle school to pay thousands after windows smashed

The school was planning to revamp its facilities, now those funds will go toward repairs.

SEATTLE — A school in West Seattle is cleaning up a mess after a man smashed windows, causing thousands of dollars worth of damage.

"It's upsetting,” said Sally Heit, the admissions director of Hope Lutheran School. “You don't want to see that. No one enjoys watching anybody vandalize any property."

On Tuesday afternoon, Heit showed the extensive damage to the school's north campus building, after someone shattered five windows early Sunday morning.

"It's frustrating to see it damaged in this way,” said Heit. “Because we do have a lot of attachment and we know the potential this building holds for lots of West Seattle students."

This building used to house Seattle Lutheran High School. Hope Lutheran acquired it over the summer with plans of expanding its middle school and pre-school programs in the space this fall. Heit said the budget is focused on revamping this school. But now approximately $4,000 worth of damage will have to go toward replacing windows.

"Having a campus that is welcoming and open to them and to new students from our community,” said Heit. “So we're just looking ahead. There's no sense in looking behind."

When it comes to the suspect, Heit said "we don't wish him any ill will; we just would like him get the help that he needs."

The Seattle Police Department is searching for the suspect, who was caught on camera.
