Lip sync video was community driven, Seattle police detective says

Seattle Police’s viral lip sync video has a hometown feel, and one police detective said she hoped it helped the community know the department cares for them.

“We wanted them to feel included in our department, and I think we included them,” said Seattle Police Detective Stephanie Palmer, who had the big idea behind the video.

Seattle Police released their lip sync video to Macklemore’s ‘Downtown’ on Wednesday. The video featured community members for a parade scene downtown in addition to cameos from Mariner Felix Hernandez, Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan, and Interim Police Chief Carmen Best.

Palmer said Seattle Police wasn’t planning to respond to the lip sync challenge from Norfolk Police, but once messages started pouring in from community members asking SPD to take part, they changed their minds.

“It’s not usually what we would do, but it was so community driven,” Palmer said.

The department hopes the lip sync challenge won’t stop with them. When they posted their video, Seattle Police challenged Metropolitan Police Service in London to the battle.

“We wanted to go big, and we wanted to take it internationally,” Palmer said.
