1 in custody after fatal shooting in Seattle's University District

There have been 73 homicides in Seattle in 2023, the highest number recorded in the city in more than four decades.

SEATTLE — A suspect is in custody after a man was shot and killed in Seattle's University District on Christmas.

The shooting happened Monday evening on 15th Avenue Northeast near Northeast 47th Street, according to the Seattle Police Department. The area is about one to two blocks north of the University of Washington campus.

First responders called to an apartment just before 5 p.m. and found a man, later identified as 37-year-old Corey Woo Seong Roe, dead. The shooting happened on the building's fifth floor.

Seattle police confirmed a man was taken into custody at the scene.

There have been 73 homicides in Seattle in 2023, the highest number recorded in the city in more than four decades, based on Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs records dating back to 1979.

No information was immediately available about what led up to the shooting or the relationship between the man in custody and the one shot.
