Grocery wars: Tips to save money the next time you shop

SEATTLE — Grocery bills can mount into the hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars every month depending on the size of your family. And when it gets expensive, it's all the reason more to search for good deals. 

KING 5 anchors Jake Whittenberg and Mimi Jung faced off for grocery wars at a Seattle Safeway to see who could save more money using everyday tricks, apps, and coupons. They were each given a list of 37 items. Jung saved $81.24, and Whittenberg saved $73.81.

Here’s three tips to save money on your next trip to the store.

Store memberships

It’s usually free to sign up for a club membership or a store rewards card, and if you spend a certain amount, you could get freebies.

Store apps

Safeway, Fred Meyer, QFC, and other stores have apps that you can use to download free coupons.

Coupon apps

Coupons.com lets you print coupons and save digital coupons on your phone. This can let you combine coupons with store discounts and save even more money.
