Recycle your old refrigerator and raise money for food banks

PSE is offering a $25 rebate for your old appliance which you can donate to a food bank -- a donation PSE will match.

EVERETT, Wash. – Puget Sound Energy customers have a chance during the holidays to recycle unwanted refrigerators and freezers and help food banks at the same time.

PSE is offering customers a $25 rebate which they can donate to Food Lifeline. PSE will match the donation.

They'll even pick up that appliance for free.

"A lot of folks don't' realize that the refrigerator is the second-highest consuming appliance in their home. An efficient refrigerator can actually use four times less energy than an inefficient one. So lots of customers see they can save $200 a year just by swapping out an old, inefficient model," said PSE Energy Efficiency spokesperson Mark Kammerer.

Food Lifeline estimates it provides five meals for every dollar donate. Donating that rebate for recycling your refrigerator will feed a family of four for two weeks.

"Out of all the people we feed, 50% are children and seniors. Seniors are the real problem right now. Cost of living goes up yet we're still living on fixed income. We're seeing a lot more seniors at the food banks," said Mark Coleman with Food Lifeline

The recycle and rebate donation promotion runs until December 15. There are few requirements, including that you must be a PSE customer and your unwanted refrigerators and freezers have to be in working order.
