King County hosting second Gift Cards for Guns event this weekend

Participants can get up to $300 in gift cards for one gun, no questions asked, at the event aimed to reduce gun violence

SHORELINE, Wash. — The King County Sheriff's Office will be hosting a Gift Cards for Guns drive-through event this Saturday in hopes of reducing firearm circulation and promoting public safety.

The event will be held at Shoreline Community College on Oct. 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., or until all gift cards have been distributed. This is the second event that the sheriff's office has hosted for the program. The event is also in collaboration with the cities of Shoreline and Kenmore.

The following is a list of accepted guns and their corresponding gift card values, according to the sheriff's office.

  • $0 for Toy Guns, BB/Pellet Guns, Homemade Firearms, Non-Firing Objects That Look Like Firearms, Ammunition, Magazines, Other Ammunition-Feeding Devices, and Firearms Accessories, Including Scopes, Optical Sights, Lights, or Other Accessories Attached to a Firearm
  • $25 for antique firearms, junk guns, firearms that appear inoperable, receivers/frames only, and bump-fire stocks.
  • $50 for muzzle-loading firearms manufactured after 1941.
  • $100 for rifles, shotguns, .22LR weapons firearms, and revolvers.
  • $200 for pistols.
  • $300 for AR-15s, AK-47s, and machine guns.

The program began after a $100,000 allotment from the King County Council in July 2022 to give the public a safe option, no questions asked, to dispose of firearms and decrease gun accidents, deaths and injuries.

The event is open to all residents of King County. Participants are asked to remain in their vehicles and unload the firearms with the safety on from the trunk or rear area, out of reach of any passengers. If possible, the sheriff's office asks people to store them in a gun case or box where a deputy can access and examine them.
