Suspect driver dead, one 72-year-old woman critically injured in Renton crash

The crash happened on Maple Valley Highway on Friday night after the driver refused to stop when he was being pulled over by state patrol.

RENTON, Wash. — A man was killed and a woman was critically injured after a crash in Renton on Friday night. 

According to the Renton Police Department (RPD), the crash happened on Maple Valley Highway at the 154th Place SE intersection. Officers responded to the crash just after 8:30 p.m.

Renton police said Washington State Patrol (WSP) attempted to pull the driver over when he fled "at a high rate of speed." Later, the suspect crashed into the victim's SUV after running a red light, according to the Washington State Patrol. 

The 39-year-old male suspect was killed and the woman driving the SUV was critically injured, according to the RPD. Police said the 72-year-old woman was taken to Harborview Medical Center, where her condition is unknown. 

According to the Washington State Patrol, the trooper who tried to pull the suspect over did not pursue.

Officers are investigating the deadly crash.
