Two bats test positive for rabies in Auburn

People may have come in contact with the bats Sunday night or Monday morning, health officials said.

Two rabid bats were found on a sidewalk in Auburn Monday morning, King County Public Health said.

Auburn Animal Control services found one dead bat and another that appeared sick near the corner of B Street NE and 3rd Street NE. The bats tested positive for rabies on August 15.

Health officials say the bats might have been on the sidewalk the previous night and may have come into contact with people or pets walking on the sidewalk.

“Rabies is treatable if caught before symptoms appear, so identifying anyone who has had contact with the bats as soon as possible is important,” said Dr. Jeff Duchin, Health Officer for Public Health – Seattle & King County. “Contact includes touching a bat, being bitten, scratched, or any other bare skin contact with a bat or its saliva.”
