1 injured in Rainier Beach shooting, suspect in custody

Seattle police identified the suspect in the shooting and arrested him without incident.

SEATTLE — A 53-year-old man is in critical condition following a shooting Saturday morning in Seattle's Rainier Beach neighborhood, according to the Seattle Police Department.

Seattle police said officers responded to a report of a person shot in the 9800 block of Martin Luther King Junior Way at around 10.m.

Arriving officers reportedly found the victim with a gunshot wound. He was transported to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition.

"This is the first time, that's why it surprises me,” said Mesfin Belay. “I've never seen before, so this is the first time and it surprised me."

Belay works at Javier’s Auto Repair, along Martin Luther King Jr. Way South near Boeing Access Road. The repair shop is right next door to a vacant private property.

"Industrial area here, not too many people living here. Most of the time, it's a peaceful place," said Belay.

Seattle police said this is where the 53-year-old man was shot on Saturday. Police said the 33-year-old accused shooter fled the scene.

Seattle police said they were able to identify the suspect in the shooting and located him at a residence in the area. Seattle police and SWAT officers took the 33-year-old suspect into custody without incident.

The suspect will be booked into King County Jail for investigation of assault.

"I just feel sorry,” said Belay. “I don't need that to happen to anybody. I feel sorry for what happened to him. When I see [this], I just feel shocked, really shocking."

Seattle Police Department detectives are still investigating what led up to the shooting.
