Pierce County man critically injured in drive-by shooting on I-5

WSP is seeking witnesses after a drive-by shooting sent a 35-year-old Pierce County man to the hospital.

TUKWILA, Wash. — A 35-year-old Pierce County man was taken to the hospital with critical injuries after a drive-by shooting on Monday night in Tukwila.

The victim was driving a Mustang. Just before 11 p.m., he called 911 to report that he was shot multiple times at southbound Interstate 5 near Interstate 405.

"He said he was starting to feel pain,” said Washington State Patrol Trooper Rick Johnson. “The victim did not have any idea of a type of vehicle or why someone was shooting at him, so we don't have any description right now."

In King County, the Washington State Patrol tracks freeway shootings. In 2022, detectives investigated 53 cases. The following year, there were 57 shootings. So far this year, there have been 11.

"Any one is alarming to us, and that is why we are pushing the patrols when we have the manpower available and working with other jurisdictions to flood areas where these are occurring more often," said Johnson.

Johnson said the department is working to GEO map where these incidents happen in an effort to monitor the areas from the air and add more patrols where they're needed.

WSP detectives are seeking witnesses for Monday night's shooting and anyone with a dashcam who was in the area. Anyone with information on the suspect or suspects is asked to contact Det. Olsen at Franklin.Olsen@wsp.wa.gov.
