10-year-old girl hit with stray bullet at Skyway apartment complex has 'life threatening' injuries

Residents said the constant crime is getting repetitive - it's the third shooting near the apartments in less than a year.

BRYN MAWR-SKYWAY, Wash. — A child was struck and injured by a stray bullet at a Skyway apartment complex early Thursday morning, according to the King County Sheriff's Office (KCSO).

The KCSO was called to an apartment complex off MLK Way and 68th Avenue just after 2 a.m. Thursday morning to a report of a shooting. When officers arrived they found a 10-year-old girl with a gunshot wound.

The girl was taken to the Harborview Medical Center. A spokesperson said she suffered life-threatening injuries from the shooting.

"We are calling the injuries life-threatening, very serious injuries needing the most advanced level of care that we have,” said Eric Autry, spokesperson for King County Fire District 20 in Skyway. "We see things that people may only encounter once or twice in their life. We see on a daily basis. When it involves a child, like in this case, it is especially hard."

There have been deep concerns over crime at the Creston Point Apartments, where the 10-year-old was shot. Residents said it is getting repetitive - it's the third shooting near the apartments in less than a year. Last June a teenager was fatally shot in the parking lot. Another person was shot in the leg in April.

Urban Family, a local nonprofit organization, said in a letter there needs to be help in Skyway.

"This recent tragedy underscores the urgent need for additional resources to combat gun violence in the Skyway area,"

The organization wants a vibrant community not one plagued by violence. Urban Family said it's working toward that goal, but is calling on others to help.

Deputies are investigating whether stray bullets hit other apartments in the complex. There were no reports of other injuries.
