Urban Games helps combat childhood obesity and promote healthy choices

The free health and wellness event is a fun way for families to learn about making healthy choices while living an active lifestyle.

SEATTLE — Childhood obesity is a growing problem in the United States, but a local event, now in its 10th year, is working to combat it.

Urban Games is a chance for kids ages 5 to 22 and their families to play and learn together to improve their health and well being.

Olympic-style games, e-sports, dance classes, fitness workshops, health and dental screenings, cooking demonstrations and performances combine to provide a fun and exciting event geared towards the prevention of childhood obesity. The organization also teaches kids about future career areas and helps connect them with colleges and employers.

"Kids don't really know they're doing healthy things while they're having fun," Benita Thomas of Urban Games said. The organization has programming to teach kids about all kinds of wellness, like  physical, emotional, social and financial health.

Chase Cook said he's participated in the Urban Games since he was about eight years old. "This is fun for me probably because the people. You just meet different types of people form around the world," Cook said.
