Bainbridge troll keeps peace, wins big - BNWE 24

Pia the Peacekeeper is a roadside attraction with a mission. #k5evening

BAINBRIDGE ISLAND, Wash — Pia the Peacekeeper is the winner of Best Roadside Attraction in 2024's Best Northwest Escapes Viewer's Poll.

You might drive right by this roadside attraction, so look for the clues, and follow the path, to find Pia the Peacekeeper, one of five giant trolls built by local volunteers and Danish artist Tomas Dambo.

"I hope that when people see the trolls they'll smile, and I hope that they will think like 'Wow, could a bunch of volunteers and a semi-good artist really make all that out of some junk?'" said Dambo.

The trolls are all built from recycled material.

Pia is making people smile from all over the world - when we visited we found Fina, who was visiting with her parents from Indonesia. She said they had visited the other Dambo troll in Ballard and Pia was #2 checked off their list.

"It's beautiful, amazing, and especially, since it tries to make peace," she said.

With dozens of visitors daily, and huge wooden hands ready to embrace anybody in a troll-hug, it's clear Pia the Peacekeeper is doing her job well.
