Thousands of homes in Western Washington were without electricity Saturday after strong winds blew through the area.

In Mason County, a power outage affected over 9,500 customers. And at the height of the outages, Puget Sound Energy says 17,000 customers were without power. The outages stretched from the Olympia area to Point Roberts, just south of Vancouver, British Columbia.

In Tacoma, strong wind toppled a large tree onto a house in the 600 block of South 6th Avenue. No one was injured, but a restaurant next door was damaged.

Winds brought down trees in the north end of King County, as well as on I-90 in Bellevue.

In Seattle, winds also whipped up waves along Alki Beach in West Seattle.

And near Gig Harbor, winds created rough waters for kayakers off Raft Island Saturday morning. Homeowners called 911 and a neighbor with a boat two rescue kayakers in trouble. The two were pulled to safety aboard the rescue boat, and emergency crews at the scene transported one of the kayakers, a female, to the hospital. Both kayakers were determined to be OK.

Winds to calm down Sunday

Winds will be breezy Sunday, but not nearly as windy as Saturday. Look for southerly winds between 10-20 mph with gusts up to 25 mph. A warm front moves through Sunday but won’t pack as much of a punch as Saturday. Temperatures will top out in the low-to-mid 50s, and the snow level will rise to 5,000 feet.
