College enrollment rates for high school seniors flat

61 percent of high school seniors head to college.

The number of high school seniors moving on to college in Washington held steady for the fourth year in a row, according to new data released by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, or OSPI.

The percentage of seniors going to college was 61 percent in 2014, the most recent data available.

It was 60 percent in 2011.

Among low-income students, the percentage of them going to college was only 49 percent.

"I had a lot of people encourage me to follow my dreams," said Mikayla Smith, a senior at Wilson High School in Tacoma, who is attending college in the fall.

Smith received guidance and support from a non-profit called the College Success Foundation.

In OSPI's latest results, staff recommend finding ways to encourage more students to take college-ready courses in high school.
