Why you won't want to snack while watching Drew Barrymore's show 'Santa Clarita Diet'

Season Two of the dark comedy begins streaming on Netflix March 23.
Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant talk to entertainment reporter Kim Holcomb about Season Two of Santa Clarita Diet.

Dark comedy Santa Clarita Diet centers on a suburban wife with a unique dilemma – she suddenly and inexplicably begins craving human flesh.

Drew Barrymore stars as the working mom who gets violently ill and somehow transforms into a lifelike zombie. She’s joyful, carefree, and needs to eat humans in order to survive.

Her husband and daughter aren’t sure why it happened, but are determined to make the new lifestyle work – by any means necessary.

Heavy on both gore and humor, the Netflix show also stars Timothy Olyphant as the struggling husband. He and Barrymore chatted with entertainment reporter Kim Holcomb about Season Two.

HOLCOMB: "I have to say, this is a good show for me to watch at night because I don't want to snack when I watch your show. (laughter)”

BARRYMORE: “The Santa Clarita Diet is working for you!"

HOLCOMB: "I do love the notion of commitment in this show because I've been with my husband for almost 20 years but if he ate a co-worker - I don't know, you guys. I don't know what I would do.”

OLYPHANT: “Right, right? On this show, we're trying to make it work. Thick and thin.”

HOLCOMB: “Do you think that's a commitment to each other, or with (Timothy’s) character in particular, to the need for normalcy?”

BARRYMORE: “That's a good question, posed well."

OLYPHANT: "Although they are killing people for her to eat and live, they are victims in this whole situation, as well.”

BARRYMORE: “They're not cannibals, they didn't ask for this.”

OLYPHANT: “Something terrible has happened to them, and it's not fair, and they're trying to get to the bottom of it."

BARRYMORE: "I think for Joel it is also trying to keep things normal through the love of his family, and his wife and daughter and wanting to protect them and maintain and not let this go off the deep end…. I think (my character) in her bliss and living her id and her best life, she's getting the full Oprah through this undead experience, but I think in this season she really tries to become more empathetic to how this is for her family."

Season Two of Santa Clarita Diet starts streaming on Netflix March 23.
