American Airlines placed an order for 47 Boeing 787 Dreamliners on Friday, nearly doubling its fleet of that model. The deal includes options for 28 more of the planes. The order is worth approximately $12 billion based on the list price of the Dreamliner.

"We are extremely honored that American Airlines, is deepening its commitment to the 787 Dreamliner. This new order is a powerful endorsement of the 787 family's unique passenger appeal and unmatched ability to help airlines open new routes and grow profitably," said Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Kevin McAllister in a news release.

The Dreamliners are extremely fuel-efficient allowing airlines to expand routes and open new routes. Boeing claims the planes lower airline operating costs by more than 20-percent compared to previous jetliners.

The 787-8 can fly up to 242 passengers as far as 7,355 nautical miles (8,463 miles). The 787-9 stretch carries 290 passengers up to 7,635 nautical miles (8,786 miles).
