400 military families receive holiday meal kits at JBLM

Hundreds of Western Washington military families got a boost Saturday from a nonprofit that handed out holiday meal kits with fixings for turkey, sides, and pumpkin pie.

CAMP MURRAY, Wash. — A nonprofit that supports military families gave out holiday meal kits to 400 families at Joint Base Lewis-McChord on Saturday.

“We’re serving 400 military families today to help ease the holiday burdens, but also show them how much the community supports them,” said Olivia Burley, Operation Homefront senior director.

Operation Homefront expected between 1,200 and 1,400 people at its Holiday Meals for Military event. It’s one of nearly two dozen events across the country that is slated to serve 7,000 meals this holiday season.

The kits include all the fixings for a family to make a holiday meal at home, including turkey, green bean casserole, yams, stuffing, and pumpkin pie.

Burley said being a military family often means spending time away from family at the holidays, and she hopes the gesture can offer a taste of home.

“We are being the extended family for all these military families here,” she said.

There will also be a Holiday Meals for Military event on December 15 in Bremerton. Register for the event here.
