Tricks for preventing hummingbird feeder from freezing
I have two feeders that I hooked up lights to and also added a thermostatically controlled plug-in ( Turns on at 35 deg's ) and a back up up timer to have them lit up at night when its not freezing. Works like a charm! - Wickie
I took a small drop light with a 60W bulb (not LED) and drilled small holes near the edge for wires to suspend from the 4 perches. Covered the bulb with aluminum foil to dissipate the heat. The nectar at the top freezes, but it's liquid in the drinking funnels. I bring it in at night and it's ready to go in the morning. They come right away. Oh yes, I live in Leavenworth and it was -1 yesterday morning. - Tom Roberts

Ours is close to the house and we keep regular red xmas lights wrapped around it all winter. We boil the sugar water 2 minutes, cool and refill every 3 days. Seems to work well! - Pam Kersten
My husband saw me fretting over my bird babies so he made me a heated feeder using a heat lamp bulb, a plastic bowl and chain, and a thermo cube. I don't fret anymore - Susan Hunter
I tried two feeders, bringing one in at night. But the hummers need to eat so early that I felt guilty. Now I tape Christmas lights (strand of 20) to the bottom and leave it on all the time. They LOVE it and it keeps it from freezing! - Mary Hilfer
